Forming Processes

Impression-die forging is also called "closed-die forging". In impression-die forging, the metal is placed in a die resembling a mold, which is attached to an anvil. Usually, the hammer die is shaped as well. The hammer is then dropped on the workpiece, causing the metal to flow and fill the die cavities.

Investment casting is an industrial process based on lost-wax casting, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. The term "lost-wax casting" can also refer to modern investment casting processes.

Metal injection molding (MIM) is a metalworking process in which finely-powdered metal is mixed with binder material to create a "feedstock" that is then shaped and solidified using injection molding. The molding process allows high volume, complex parts to be shaped in a single step. After molding, the part undergoes conditioning operations to remove the binder and densify the powders.

Plastic Injection molding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material, most commonly thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, into a mold. Material for the part is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and injected into a mold cavity, where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the cavity.

Stamping (also known as pressing) is the process of placing flat sheet metal in either blank or coil form into a stamping press where a tool and die surface forms the metal into a net shape.

Extrusion is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile by pushing material through a die of the desired cross-section.

Coiling utilizes a spring coiler or CNC spring coiler machine. The technician operating the machine sets it up to prepare it for the specific type of coil being made and feeds the wire into a set of rollers, which pulls the spring wire toward a set of guides. Eventually, the guides lead the wire to a coiling point or set of coiling points, which coil the wire backward to form a spring.
